Who is Supervision for?

At Inner Fire Counseling, my mission is to help provide supervision for licensed professional counselors (LPC), Licensed Master of Social Worker (LMSW), and Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC/ADC) in the state of Idaho working toward their clinical license/certificate (LCPC/LCSW/ACADC).

What is supervision?

Supervision is a formal process in which a qualified or trainee counselor regularly presents his or her client work to a designated or chosen supervisor as way of enhancing their practice through careful reflection on the process.

You might talk about:

  • Legal issues and liability.
  • Countertransference issues (feelings you have about your clients)
  • Documentation and note taking.
  • Clinical skills and interventions.
  • Theoretical orientations and frameworks for change.
  • Measuring outcomes and asking for feedback (evaluation)
  • Fees and finances.

My approach

My approach to supervision is collaborative, I feel we can learn from each other. I try to approach supervision through a multi-faceted lens to provide education, increase clinical skills, and staff clients you may feel stuck with not knowing where to go next in therapy sessions. I also love to discuss wins in therapy not just the struggles. I focus on self-care for counselors because without that we become compromised in our roles as supportive professionals. I practice and supervise through varying techniques/theories from: motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT),  person-centered therapy, and solution-focused therapy. I love to provide education on topics of interest for counselors to further their knowledge and skills to better our communities. I have a background in addiction and specialize in working with the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

Counselors and social workers in Idaho need one (1) hour of clinical supervision for every thirty (30) hours of direct client contact. For social workers I can only provide you with 50 hours of the total 100 you will need in supervision and the rest have to be completed with a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADC) need 200 hours of clinical supervision with a minimum of ten (10) hours in each of the 12 Core Functions/Domains. See licensure resources for more information.
